Mock Trial Team Concludes Competitive Season

The Mock Trial team recently concluded its competitive season with a regional competition against 12 other universities. The event, hosted by the American Mock Trial Association (AMTA), took place via Zoom.

"Mock Trial's performance at their regional competition was awesome, and it was their best event all year," said Dr. Mark Scully, assistant professor of political science at Lee and sponsor of the team. "Individual members from our team were recognized for their excellence, and both teams were extremely competitive. They faced a lot of adversity and uncertainty with poise and fortitude, and never backed down. This is the culmination of a year of working together on a weekly basis, challenging and supporting each other, and ultimately laying a strong foundation for the upcoming season!"

The competition had teams from Arizona State University, Clemson University, Duke University, Florida State University, The George Washington University, Georgetown University, University of Georgia, Georgia Tech, Northwestern University, University of Oregon, Princeton University, and University of Richmond.

Lee's Navy team competed in AMTA Regional 3-G, while the Maroon team competed in Regional 3-F. Both teams performed well and were one win short of obtaining an Opening Round Championship Series bid.

During the competition, team member Paul Atherton received an Outstanding Attorney Award, and Shauna Drinnon and Andrew Rumfelt received Outstanding Witness Awards.

"This year has been particularly special to me," said Sydney Taylor, vice president of Lee's Mock Trial team and a junior political science major. "It is a consistent community that I am incredibly grateful for! I am honored to learn, compete, and grow alongside my teammates and my friends. Mock Trial also allows me to display my creativity and greatly prepares me for my future within the legal field. I could not imagine my undergraduate experience without Mock Trial."

While the competition was Mock Trial's last event of the season, the team will begin recruiting events on campus later this semester.
