Student Spends Summer Serving in Honduras

This summer, Ally Schall, a senior nursing major, served in Rio Viejo, Honduras, at the Jungle Hospital for 10 weeks as part of a medical missions internship.

While there, Schall spent time working in the hospital treating patients, setting up clinics in nearby villages, and updating charts. She also worked on the property, hosted teams, cleaned the buildings, helped with construction on a new property, and assisted with meal preparation.

"I have always felt called to missions in some capacity, and I wanted to have an opportunity to experience medical missions for an extended period of time," said Schall.

At Lee, Schall is part of Sigma Theta Tau, the nursing honors society, and is involved with Cru, an outreach and worship ministry on campus. Originally from Cleveland, Ohio, Schall now resides in Iowa during breaks. Upon graduating, Schall plans to continue to pursue medical missions.

"One of the missionaries told us at the beginning of the internship that we would all leave changed for the better," said Schall. "I knew she would be right, but I didn't realize to what extent I would be changed. My perspective has grown so much in nursing, missions, God, friendships, and leadership."

Dr. Brenda Jones, an assistant professor of nursing at Lee and the coordinator of the family nurse practitioner track, led Schall to this trip. "Ally is an exceptional young lady who has a passion for God and a passion for life," said Jones. "Since getting to know her, I have had the opportunity to listen to her heart and provide guidance in navigating pathways for her to reach out and serve others in an international setting. She is bold, fearless, confident, and driven, and it is a pleasure to see her grow in her academic, spiritual, and personal life while being engaged here on the Lee University campus."
